The Best Way To Try Out Clean Beauty On a Budget

So You’ve Heard of How

amazing clean beauty is, and you want to give it a try. If you’re unsure of where to start and don’t want to spend too much on a product you’re not sure will work for you, I have just the thing to get your foot in the door! Just two weeks of using the products below changed my skin drastically.

But before we get into all of that, you might be wondering what clean beauty is:

Just because a beauty product is clean, does not mean it is “natural”. Clean means non-toxic and safe, and can include lab-made ingredients, while natural means unprocessed, found in and of nature. Not only that, but clean beauty refers to the safety of ingredients as well as efficacy.

Let’s take rosewater as a toner, for example. It is natural because it is 100% rosewater with no other ingredients. It is clean because its antibacterial properties can reduce redness, which proves its efficacy; and it’s also safe to use. Now, let’s say the rosewater has another ingredient, Capryl Glucoside, which is a safe ingredient made by reacting an alcohol with sugar. Then, this rosewater toner would no longer be natural, but instead only clean. Get it? No? Boring? Then TL;DR — clean beauty is safe and it works and here’s how you can get started:

This kit is how I first started to get into clean beauty. It’s only $25 for a basic skincare routine — soap to wash your hands, cleanser to remove dirt/exfoliate, toner for prepping, and moisturizer. TIP: use code ref_clairesua for 15% OFF

If you haven’t heard of the company, Follain is a retailer that constantly tests products to place on their shelves. Only 10% pass this test, because not only does Follain screen for unsafe ingredients, but it enlists a panel of people to test the efficacy of a product for 4-6 weeks. As a Follain ambassador who has been using its products for a year now, let me give you a break down of each product in this kit and my real opinion on them — no commission, no affiliate links:

Not only is this soap clean, but it’s versatile because it’s almost like a castille soap where you can use it on just about anything. I don’t use it to wash my face because I feel weird using an “everything soap” for my face, even though the ingredient list shows it’s pretty gentle.

I also use it as a pet soap for my cat and it leaves her smelling unbelievably good, especially the lavender scent.

ALSO, it’s sustainable! If you can get to a Follain store, they have this on tap for you to refill your full-size bottle.

I didn’t notice much of a change with this cleanser, but my sister has claimed that it works pretty well. The consistency is sort of like a creamy gel although it’s listed as just a gel. The smell is great because of the cypress and juniper, but as someone who has dryer skin, I felt this made my face feel pretty dry in the winter months, although I’m curious to see how it works in the summer.

People who like this cleanser have normal/combo/oily skin so definitely worth giving it a try if you fall under those categories! If not, it’s still a great value, lasts a long time for its size, and gentle enough to use everyday to exfoliate.

This is hands-down the best toner I’ve tried. I’m not one to notice changes in my skin — seriously, people will be raving about a new product, I’ll try it, and not notice a thing. But with this one, the moment you put it on, I feel my skin eats all of its juices up!

A toner is meant to prepare your clean, dry skin for heavier liquids in the skincare routine process, and this does that by drying quickly while making skin still feel refreshingly damp. It seeps into your skin instead of just sitting there for a long time. Out of everything in this kit, I still use only this product because I think the full product size is still affordable.

Last, but NOT least — hands down. Best moisturizer. I’ve. Ever. Used.

If my budget could afford this kick-ass cream, I would use the standard size product everyday. This especially worked for me in the winter months since I have really dry skin then. I was so pleased to feel such intense hydration without any grease from a thick cream — It doesn’t take a while to apply but instead melts into your skin.

A little goes a long way with this one, since the cream is so thick and rich. My sister who also has oily skin and prone to acne has loved this recovery cream as well and I’ve noticed her skin get clearer with this as well.
