Health Benefits of Butterfly Pea Tea (Blue Tea)

Who knew this Blue tea that WENT VIRAL…

… two years ago because of its stunning good looks was so good for cognitive function? This is butterfly pea tea and I wanted to research the health benefits as someone who is deeply curious about traditional methods of healing after I met my grandmaster who teaches me ancient methods of healing and martial arts in the mountains.

This is one I had to research on my own, though. Butterfly pea is native to Southeast Asia and commonly used in Ayurveda, TCM, and other forms of ancient medicine. It has been used for centuries as a brain herb to treat anxiety and combat depression, enhance memory, and overall aid in brain health and cognitive function. Below are the varying health benefits of butterfly pea tea that different civilizations have used:

Health Benefits:

Did you know that foods that are blue often contain specific compounds that may have the following health benefits?

  • Rich in Antioxidants: Many blue-colored foods derive their color from a group of antioxidants called anthocyanins, which help protect cells from oxidative stress and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Butterfly pea tea is a powerhouse of antioxidants, which helps combat oxidative stress and reduces the risk of chronic diseases, skin health, as well as boosting the immune system.

  • Boosts Cognitive Function: Some research suggests that anthocyanins may have neuroprotective effects. They may support cognitive function and potentially reduce the risk of age-related cognitive decline. Ancient cultures recognized the tea's ability to enhance cognitive function, promoting mental clarity and focus.

  • Anti-inflammatory Properties: Anthocyanins have also been associated with contributing to anti-inflammatory effects in the body.

COOLING PROPERTIES:

Butterfly pea tea is believed to have cooling properties, which food having cooling and warming effects on your body is a very important principle in both Ayurvedic and Traditional East Asian medicine, which western medicine overlooks. So it’s great for those with excess heat in their bodies or yang energy (양기), which may mean you have a lot of inflammation and constipation, are prone to anxiety, and sweat easily according to my research. I have a lot of yang energy and struggle with those problems so this was super interesting to me!

Remember that food and herbs can either make you ill or heal you, so not everything is for everyone. You should always consult with an expert and go over your current health conditions and any medication you’re currently taking.

Where can I Get Butterfly Pea Tea?

It’s important to understand that much like everything else you consume, quality is everything. I have always admired a brand called The Qi for its mission to help people feel more alive in a frantic, modern world as well for the quality of their whole flowers. They work with small, family-owned expert farmers throughout East Asia, where tea originated from. They are organically grown and are single-origin, meaning what you get comes from only one place, so you’re not questioning the consistency of the product. I created a viral video to show them that I’d love to work for them as a marketing consultant, so I’m able to receive gifting to try out the products. Here is a link - use SUA15 if you’d like to try!

FLAVOR

For me, the flavor is quite mild. If you’re an avid coffee drinker, then you won’t really be able to taste anything as the coffee affects your taste buds. The mild taste of the blue tea is a bit earthy.
